“I am not an MQL!” - I was standing in line to pick my badge on the first day for 2024 RSAC, and couldn’t help overhearing the heated conversation of two cybersecurity executives behind me in the line.
They went on a rant on how they were sick and tired of being treated as nuts and bolts on the conveyor belt of a “customer journey” and the “sales funnel”.
And all the while I was thinking to myself: with all the new technology, maybe it is being human that needs to be at a premium.
And may be it is time to set aside automated this, and technology enhanced that and start seeing humans not as marketing abbreviations of MQLs, SQLs, and SALs.
But as Jennifer and Bob.
With kids’ sports and carpools and mortgages and high cholesterol. With hopes and fears and dreams.
And just maybe we will realize that treating humans as cogs on a conveyor belt is demeaning, dehumanizing and condescending.
That playing the long game (relationship) is the only game that is left.
Let’s call it “Human-Based-Marketing”.
You heard it first here.
I hope it sticks.
